What Is AIO? AI Optimisation Explained for Australian Businesses

4 May 2026 · 6 min read

AIO is not the same as SEO

SEO optimises for how search engine algorithms rank pages. AIO — AI Optimisation — optimises for how large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot understand, summarise and cite a business when a user asks a direct question.

For an Australian business, this matters because the buying journey is shifting. Someone planning a kitchen renovation in Melbourne might ask an AI assistant 'who's a reliable renovation company near me' instead of typing that into Google. If your brand isn't structured to be understood by that assistant, you simply don't exist in that answer.

How AI models decide who to recommend

Large language models are trained on structured, unambiguous content — clear facts about what a business does, who it serves, and what makes it credible. Vague marketing copy doesn't give these systems much to work with.

Schema markup, consistent business information across the web (your name, address and services matching everywhere), and content written in a direct, citable format all increase the odds an AI system references your brand confidently instead of a competitor's.

Where to start with AIO

Begin by testing how ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot currently describe your business — you may find they don't mention you at all, or worse, get details wrong. From there, the work is structural: schema markup, entity consistency, and rewriting key pages into a format these models can extract facts from cleanly.

This is still early days for most Australian businesses, which is exactly the opportunity — brands investing in AI visibility now are the ones these systems will already 'know' by the time AIO becomes standard practice.
